our experience
Both Elisa and live in the United States - I was born in New Hampshire, and Elisa moved to Miami, Florida when she was 5 years old. But even though we've lived the US culture all our lives, there is still plenty to explore. The 50 states are bigger by far than all of Europe, and span all the climates, from the deserts of Arizona, to mild sunny California, to the frigid states in the North. Since the country is so big, we divided it into sections. Each place has its own unique culture, which even we have not explored fully!
the north east (NEw england)
Ruth - I was born and raised in the New England, in a New Hampshire town an hour away from Boston. New England is the most historical part of the US, because it's the region where the first pilgrims settled in America and started the country. It has all the seasons, from a fall with stunning foliage, to a very snowy (but very long) winter, to a spring full of flowers, to a summer that's just right. It's buildings are often very old and its streets laid out most similar to Europe. There are beautiful cities to visit in New England, but also plenty of outdoor activites, from hiking to lakes to the beach in the summer.
Must-go Places:
|
- The Coast: There's hundreds of beachs all along the upper east coast. Some are great for relaxing on the sand, others are historical ports where you can window shop
- The Mountains: Mount Washington in Northern NH is the most famous hike in the North-East, at 6, 289 feet (1,917 meters). Others in New Hampshire inclue Mount Major, Mount Rattlesnake, Mount Kilamanjaru, and more. In the winter, many of these mountains become great ski locations, especially in NH, Vermont, and Maine
- Famous Lakes: Lake Winnepesaukee, Lake Champlain, Squam Lake, etc. Great for canoeing, camping, boating, and swimming!
east coast continued
Ruth: My family has taken many road trips down the East Coast during summer vacations, to visit my older siblings and Dad's side of the family. My roots are in the East, so of course I would highly recommend it.
Elisa: Must-go Places:
Known mostly for it's theme parks and for its sunny climate and Miami scene Orlando - holds the four Disney parks: magic kingdom, animal kingdom, Epcot, and Hollywood studios. It also holds the Universal parks: islands of adventure and Universal. There is also various water parks such as aquatica, sea world, and blizzard beach Miami- known for its beaches, vibrant party scene, Latin feel, and abundance in shopping centers Miami (my home town) holds so much because every place is a different cultural puzzle piece that comes together to form this incredible city Miami Beach is beautiful and the people and music always have you in a good mood. Miami Beach is also home to Lincoln road a famous shopping strip with a variety of stores, restaurants, and street performers The Wynwood district is home to Miami's modern art scene with wynwood walls (street art) that blows people's minds with its bright colors and hidden messages There's museum park which includes Miami's two big museums: the PAMM which is a modern art museum and the Frost |
central US
Colorado:
Known for its ski resorts Even if there isn't snow and it's cold the respite sometimes makes snow (though it can get icy and a bit tough to ski) Vail- very family friendly skiing town-has ice skating rinks a bunch of cute restaurants and of course ski slopes- Vail also has Gondolas for those who don't want to ski but what to enjoy the view Aspen- for the more advanced skiers- steep icy slopes Keystone- very kid and teenager friendly, has a bunch of activities including sledding, human bowling , disco themed snow slides and includes one of the longest green slopes in Colorado for beginners Skiing in Colorado is always fun but I've never been really good so needless to say I was more on the ground than standing. It can still be a really relaxing place and it's a lot of fun for the family |
the west coast
Ruth - Neither Elisa nor I have ever been to California, but I once took a trip to Arizona to visit my brother. The America of Arizona was so strikingly different from the US of my home in NH, I could barely believe it was the same country.
